Let's Make Wheels & Casting Our Own Wheels
What is Casting?
Casting is a manufacturing process where a liquid material is poured into a mold and allowed to solidify, taking the shape of the mold. This technique is widely used in robotics and other industries to create parts with complex shapes, smooth surfaces, and specific material properties. In robotics, casting enables the creation of custom wheels, grips, and other components that require durability and flexibility.
Types of Casting Methods
- Resin Casting: Uses liquid resins (like polyurethane) that cure into solid plastic or rubber parts.
- Metal Casting: Involves pouring molten metal into molds for strong, rigid parts.
- Silicone Casting: Utilizes silicone for flexible, soft components.
- Injection Molding: Forces material into a mold under pressure, common for mass production.
- 3D Printed Molds: Modern technique where molds are made using 3D printing, allowing rapid prototyping and customization.
Tutorial: Casting Fidget Spinners with Resin
For this tutorial, we'll use these fidget spinner molds and a suitable resin. This process is similar to how we'll make robot wheels later.
Materials Needed
- Fidget spinner molds (link)
- Polyurethane resin
- Mixing cups and sticks
- Gloves and safety gear
Steps
Cover your area and wear gloves. Make sure molds are clean and dry.
Follow the instructions for your resin. Usually, mix equal parts of resin and hardener thoroughly.
Slowly pour the mixed resin into the fidget spinner molds, filling them completely.
Allow the resin to cure as directed (10 minutes).
Carefully remove the solid fidget spinners from the molds.
Once demolded, insert the bearing into the center hole of the fidget spinner and snap on the plastic cover.
Once assembled, enjoy your custom fidget spinner! Consider painting or adding stickers for a personal touch.
Next Time: Casting Rubber Treads for Robot Wheels
In our next session, we'll use Flex-It 70 polyurethane rubber to cast flexible treads for robot wheels. We'll 3D print custom molds, place our 3D printed wheel cores inside, and pour the rubber resin to create durable, grippy wheels for our robots.
How to Cast Your Own Robot Wheels
Learn how to design, mold, and cast custom wheels for your robotics projects. This guide will walk you through the process, materials, and tips for success.
- Design: Sketch or CAD your wheel shape and size.
- Mold Making: Use 3D printing, laser cutting, or manual methods to create a mold.
- Materials: Choose silicone, urethane, or rubber compounds for casting.
- Casting: Mix and pour your material into the mold, let it cure.
- Finishing: Trim, drill, and fit your wheels to your robot.
Tips: Use release agents for easy demolding, experiment with different compounds for grip, and always wear safety gear!
